Laryngeal Cancer - Cancer of the Voice
Box
Many patients with cancer of the larynx have to undergo a Total
Laryngectomy i.e. removal of their whole voice box. This results
in total loss of speech - devastating result for all patients. Fortunately
patients can communicate with the help of an Electrolarynx or by
fitting of a Tracheo Esophageal Voice Prosthesis. A good Electrolarynx
costs upwards of Rs 30,000/- (@$ 700) and a Voice Prosthesis costs
Rs 12,000/- (@ $250). Many patients are not able to afford such
devices. IMPACT helped a few patients with such devices, changing
their whole outlook towards life and making their lives more meaningful.
